The city of Covina is located 22 miles from East LA. Its population was about 47,796 according to a 2010 census. Covina was founded by Joseph Swift Phillips in 1882. However, a young engineer, Frederick Eaton, later named the city Covina.

Eaton was inspired by the mountains of San Gabriel which formed a natural cove around the vineyards. He combined the words cove and wine, which is how the city came to be known as Covina.
